Subject: Falling From a Cliff is Anti-American
Kids, why should you not do stupid things and then get hurt? Why, because "YOU ARE THE AMERICA OF TOMORROW!" Cue the waving flag.
That's right. Getting ... injured has nothing to do with discomfort. It's all about patriotism.
Ah, Sid Davis, you never fail to disappoint.
The best scene is, of course, the Nick/cliff one, where Nick, for unexplained reasons, falls backwards like into a swimming pool. After the epic footage of a stuffed dummy dropping down a small cliff, Nick comes out of it holding his wrist like he's shaking a puppy's paw.
Since Kent State is far into the future, the policeman is still your friend.
I like how the kids are supposed to be on one side of the fence, but they're STILL on wrong side when Officer Rope Man shows up.
The runner-up acting award goes to the kid at 3:11 who violently turns around and covers his face with his hands from a fire about four feet away from him.
The advice given in the short is sound, and will likely be given to kids 100 years from now.

I don't think I have laughed so much as when the boy falls off the cliff. He slips, the next shot a very bad dummy thrown off the cliff, the next clip
...
he is stood at the moment of the cliff with just a sore wrist. LOL
By the way the dummy was thrown off I would of thought he had been killed out right.

I was born in 1958. Do you know all the crazy, dangerous sh*t we did?!! -Crazy stuff- Surprised we survived. I saw kids fall from tall trees on picket
...
fences, flip over handle bars onto pointed objects, get hit by cars, shot in the head with real arrows, jump off two-story roofs, thrown into the deep-end to learn how to swim etc. Don't know if kids today are as dangerous as we were. Hard to believe the way parents hover over kids.

Unquestionably the film most consistently demanded by us when we were kids! If we were gonna have to sit and watch a health film...this was it! Every
...
single time (and from what I hear - every single class!) screamed to high heaven when Nick goes over the cliff! Same scenario too, every time - it was a ritual!...on went the lights, off went the projector, followed by a bitchin out from the gym teacher; and within a week, we're begging her to show us that film again (and the teacher would say OK, OK, she'd try to get it "from downtown.") What a pigeon.
Far as I'm concerned, this was Sid Davis' masterpiece!
[NOTE: We were never shown Boys Beware...and insofar as a truck route went right through the middle of the neighborhood, it wouldn't have been a bad idea to have shown that film to us - despite the very touchy subject matter, never to be even mentioned in those days]

While a little dated now, this film still was an excellent safety film for youngsters back in the early 1950's. It is well written, filmed, and directed.

Subject: A smorgasbord of danger
Sid Davis' 1951 film Live and Learn illustrates several preventable, life-threatening situations in which children frequently find themselves due to their
...
own indiscretion. Most of the accidents depicted are fairly pedestrian, but some are quite sensational. After each accident occurs, the film escorts the viewer to the hopsital and forces them to observe the grave injuries suffered by each child. The interesting patriotic appeal made at the end of the film seems to intimate that the very survival of the United States is at risk should children not heed the admonitions of the narrator and exercise caution. Considering the geopolitical climate when this film was released, such a sentiment is not surprising.

Here he tells the kids, don't pour gas on the fire! Don't run with scissors! Don't walk to close to cliffs! And of course, the bb gun excuse, "You might put out an eye!" Who ARE all of these kids with bad aim? All of the kids suffer the consequences in one way or another (the kid off the cliff is quite funny) and then get bandaged up in the hospital (burned kid looks like the Pope). All of this is VERY odd, featuring ATROCIOUS acting by the kids, like the worst anywhere and that adds up to a MUST SEE on this site!

fun of it. In Live and Learn, the girl with the scissors has been identified in other places as Jill Davis, the daughter of the Producer. While this is accurate, who were the others? I can identify four more:
"Ed" who rocks the boat, is Richard L. Creasey, now living in Nevada.
"Bob" who falls in the lake is Robert C. Offutt, deceased.
The boy with the rifle (not a BB gun) is James O. Bartlett, now living in Michigan.
The boy who loses an eye is John L. Bartlett, now living in Virginia.
Perhaps someone else can identify the others in this film?
It is likely that all of these people get a kick out of their brush with motion picture stardom, or perhaps they are embarrased by it. In my opinion, they should at least get billing.
Now I must rate this film to complete the review. I am biased. I think we all were first rate actors, but I must take a more distant view and see this film in the context of the time and the type of production that it was. So I will go along with the reviewer before me and give it three stars.

This was the first Sid Davis let's-scare-kids-into-being-safe film. It's a litlle less strident than his later filmsÂÂperhaps he had yet to perceive
...
that kids just weren't listening. Just as many yards of gauze bandaging is used to wrap up the unfortunate kids who dared to act unsafely, though. Includes a bit about BB guns that literally tells us you can put an eye out with one of those things. A film version of your mom.
